EIGO WA DAME!
The idea behind Richland's Japanese program is to teach Japanese in a simulated native environment. In other words, rather than teaching Japanese words and phrases and their corresponding meaning in English, we are trying to impress Japanese upon the students IN JAPANESE. If words are translated into English, the student will learn to think in English first and translate. Conversely, spoken Japanese will be translated back into English. The translation process takes time and is inefficient. By learning the words in their original language, the extra translation step is avoided, and students pick up the language quicker.
Of course, this can be frustrating at times, and some students will throw up their hands. The key is to strive to understand the words, not translate them into what we know. Also, students must be content with partial understanding in the beginning. This method requires patience and a sense of humor. The students must be willing to make mistakes and risk embarrassment. As time goes on, students will gain confidence in their abilities and see the logic and strengths of this methodology.
All languages require a considerable investment of time and energy. It is my hope that the students keep trying and stay enthused. I will do my best to make each lesson interesting. If you have any comments, or suggestions, please feel free to email me using the form below.
